ptnetinspector v0.2

As my master’s thesis project, I implemented version 0.2 of ptnetinspector, a Python-based tool designed to detect hosts in local IPv6 networks. The biggest improvement was a significant reduction in runtime in larger networks, reducing scan times to a fraction of the original duration.

The project required an understanding of IPv4, IPv6, and supporting protocols such as ICMP and ICMPv6, including weaknesses that enable effective network scanning. My contribution included implementing IGMP and MLD support. I also reviewed and improved the use of name resolution services such as mDNS, DNS-SD, and LLMNR.

Homelab

Network infrastructure

  • Managed routing with load balancing between multiple ISPs
  • Redundant gateway configuration using VRRP
  • Multi-vendor devices:
    • Mikrotik – routing
    • Cisco – switching
    • Ubiquiti – wireless
    • APC – UPS power backup

Linux server

  • Cloudflare WARP connector
  • Let’s Encrypt automated free certificate deployment
  • Docker – containerized services
    • Samba domain (LDAP provider)
    • Zabbix monitoring
    • Netbox documentation
    • GitLab code repository
    • Nginx reverse proxies
    • Internal web services

I operate a self-hosted home lab focused on networking, monitoring, automation, and internal services.

The network is designed with multi-WAN connectivity, gateway failover, centralized monitoring, and documented infrastructure. Routing and failover are handled using MikroTik routers, while switching is provided by Cisco and wireless connectivity by Ubiquiti devices.

The server side is based on Linux and Docker. It hosts internal services such as monitoring, documentation, source code management, reverse proxies, and centralized authentication. Services are exposed through Nginx where appropriate, with automated Let’s Encrypt certificate deployment.

Monitoring is handled by Zabbix using SNMP and custom scripts. Infrastructure documentation is maintained in NetBox.

Key technologies in use: Linux, Docker, Nginx, Zabbix, NetBox, GitLab, Samba, MikroTik, Cisco, Ubiquiti, Let’s Encrypt

Community web project

I maintain a small community resource portal hosted on professional Wedos web hosting infrastructure.

The project is based on WordPress and uses the SQL server provided by Wedos. It uses custom plugin to communicate with the Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, and Seznam Webmaster Reporter APIs to check the indexing status of all pages and posts on the website, including alternate redirected link formats. It also checks favicons indexed by search engines when the favicon URL is predictable.

Key technologies: SPF, DKIM, DMARC, custom plugins, Wordpress, SQL
